Research Issues
Our lab begins by questioning the very slogan of "sustainability." From the tectonics of materials to the energy flows of cities, we rethink the built environment from its foundations, through data and theory, in search of better alternatives for Korean housing and provincial cities.
Can Korean apartments be built of wood? This research begins with that question. It examines the conditions under which reinforced concrete (the default typology of Korean housing) can transition to mass timber construction: fire and evacuation regulations, the adequacy of domestic forest resources, carbon reduction potential, and social acceptability. Arguing for sustainability with numbers rather than slogans, we rethink Korean housing beyond concrete.
If no architecture is truly sustainable, how do cities endure? This research begins with that provocative question. Viewing the city as a living open system through which energy and matter continuously flow, we analyze the dynamics of urban formation, operation, and decay through thermodynamic concepts; entropy, exergy, and emergy. The inquiry extends to the capitalist systems, real estate markets, and administrative structures that distort and manage these flows, diagnosing the contradictions of Korean cities that repeat demolition-and-reconstruction cycles under the banner of "eco-friendliness," and rethinking urban energy flows over a 300-year horizon.
How does the architecture of a Korean provincial city become of its place? This research begins by asking what distinct regional identities remain in an architecture that has homogenized around the standards of Seoul. Grounded in Critical Regionalism, it traces how local culture and topography have inscribed themselves into buildings, asking how Korean regionality has developed, and how it ought to develop. Within the tension between universal technological civilization and local specificity, we rethink what it means to practice architecture outside the capital.
Can the failed dream of prefabrication be rewritten with today's technology? This research begins with that question. Post-war prefabricated housing in Europe largely failed for lack of cultural sensitivity and design quality; today, robotic fabrication and performance simulation offer the means to overcome those limits. Exploring the design possibilities of modular timber construction and integrating performance factors such as acoustics and thermal comfort into digital fabrication workflows, we rethink the possibilities of construction at the boundary of design, engineering, and computation.
